Farm Bios

Our produce shares highlight the fall and winter harvests of our farm partners around the state.

Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative (TOG)
Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative started with no outside funding, just an idea that farmers could work together to grow their produce sustainably and profitably. It began in 1988 with three farms deciding to work together. Now in the 26th season, TOG works with 44 member producers and an additional 15 non-member growers. Most of the growers’ farms are located throughout Bedford, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Perry counties. A true model of a cooperative, TOG offers us myriad produce from local, certified organic growers.

K. Schlegel Fruit Farm
About 4 hours outside of Pittsburgh, in Central PA, Betsy and Karl Schlegel own 75 acres of fruit: 25 acres of apples as well as peaches, sweet cherries, apricots, and pluots. K. Schlegel Fruit Farm is certified Integrated Pest Management (IPM), meaning they use various natural techniques to manage harmful pests in their orchards before resorting to chemical pesticide use.

Phillips Mushroom Farms
I
n Kennett Square, PA, Phillips Mushroom Farms is producing 200 million pounds of mushrooms annually. William W. Phillips began mushroom farming in 1920, and his early temperature control experiments were a significant breakthrough for the mushroom industry, allowing mushrooms to be grown year round. Still family owned, Phillips Mushroom Farms distributes common, exotic, and dried mushrooms to all 50 States.
